Doan, Maple Leafs mutually part ways

Players are hearing from a series of high-profile speakers at Leafs development camp this week, including Shane Doan, who is a special advisor to the GM Brad Treliving. Doan played 1,540 games in the NHL but, as he told the 46 players, the start of his career was anything but smooth.

Shane Doan’s time with the Toronto Maple Leafs is over.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the two sides are mutually parting ways with Doan’s contract set to expire on June 30.

Doan, 49, joined the organization in the spring of 2023 as a special advisor to general manager Brad Treliving. Treliving was fired by the Leafs at the end of March. Prior to joining the Leafs, Doan spent two seasons as the chief hockey development officer of the Arizona Coyotes.

LeBrun notes that Doan was recently interviewed by the Vancouver Canucks for their general manager vacancy.

A native of Halkirk, Alta., Doan appeared in 1,540 career games across 21 NHL seasons from 1995 to 2017 for the Winnipeg Jets-Arizona Coyotes. He scored 402 goals and added 570 assists.

A two-time All-Star, Doan also represented Canada on numerous occasions, including at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

Doan’s son, Josh Doan, is a forward with the Buffalo Sabres.
