Flames sign D Nemec to five-year, $36.25M contract

The Calgary Flames have signed restricted free agent defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year, $36.25 million contract that carries a cap hit of $7.25 million.

Nemec, 22, was acquired from the New Jersey Devils, along with forward Maksim Tsyplakov, on June 23 in exchange for three draft picks.

He had 11 goals and 26 points in 68 games with the Devils last season while averaging 19:40 of ice time.

The 6-foot-1, right-shot defenceman is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract.

Drafted second overall by the Devils in 2022, Nemec has 16 goals and 49 points in 155 career games.

The Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia, native represented his country at The Winter Olympics in February, registering two assists in a fourth-place finish. He also represented Slovakia at The Winter Olympics in 2022, recording an assist to take home a bronze medal.

Nemec represented his country three times at the World Hockey Championship from 2022 to 2024, finishing as high as seventh place.
