Ice Chips: Stars’ Rantanen has a chance to return Saturday vs. Penguins

Dallas Stars

Injured right winger Mikko Rantanen could be eyeing a return for Saturday’s game against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 29-year-old, who suffered a lower-body injury at Milano Cortina 2026 in Italy, hasn’t played an NHL game since Feb. 4.

Rantanen was a full participant in practice on Friday.

Rantanen has tallied 20 goals and 49 assists over 54 games in 2025-26, his first full season with the the Stars since being acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of last year’s trade deadline.

In other injury news regarding the Stars, forward Sam Steel has flown back to Dallas to be evaluated after suffering an injury during Thursday’s loss to the New York Islanders.

Head coach Glen Gulutzan said the injury is likely a hip flexor or groin injury.

The 28-year-old Steel has 12 goals and 21 assists over 72 games this season.

Dallas has three games remaining on their road trip.

The Stars have already locked down a playoff spot, currently sitting second in the Central Division with a 43-18-11 record.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Defenceman Damon Severson suffered an upper-body injury during Thursday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens and is out week-to-week.

The 31-year-old has eight goals and 24 assists over 71 games for the Blue Jackets.

Columbus is holding down the third playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division with a 38-23-11 record through 72 games.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Following a nine-game run with the Maple Leafs, Bo Groulx has been sent down to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The 26-year-old native of Rouen, France produced three goals and two assists over nine games with the Maple Leafs. He has 27 goals and 23 assists over 54 games in the minors this season.

As noted by TSN’s Mark Masters, if Groulx played one more game with the big club, he would need to go through waivers in order to join the Marlies for the AHL playoffs.

With nine games remaining in the AHL regular season, the Marlies sit third in the North Division with a 32-21-5 record

Groulx could rejoin the Leafs again this season on an emergency recall.

Toronto will take on the Blues in St. Louis on Saturday.

Winnipeg Jets

Forward Parker Ford and Danny Zhilkin have been recalled from the AHL’s Manitoba Moose on emergency conditions.

Ford, 25, has one assist over 11 games with the Jets this seas on while 22-year-old Zhilkin hasn’t recorded a point over four games.

Buffalo Sabres

Centre Noah Ostlund is considered a game-time decision for Friday’s contest against the visiting Detroit Red Wings due to an upper-body injury.

The 22-year-old Swede has 11 goals and 16 assists over 60 games in 2025-26, his rookie season in the NHL.

Goalie Alex Lyon is expected to get the start in net on Friday.

With 10 games remaining in the regular season, the upstart Sabres are holding down the top spot in the Atlantic Division with a 44-20-8 record, two points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Detroit Red Wings

The playoff hopeful Red Wings will start John Gibson in net for Friday’s critical game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Cam Talbot will be game-time decision to serve as the backup.

Detroit has struggled as of late and currently sit three points behind the New York Islanders for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Carolina Hurricanes

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour is hoping veteran defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere will be able to return to action against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

Gostisbehere was a full participant in Friday’s practice.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played since March 6 due to lower-body injury.

Gostisbehere has 11 goals and 32 assists over 45 games this season.
