The New York Islanders are turning to their fans to design its third jersey.
The Islanders announced on Wednesday that they are launching a fan-driven third jersey contest for the 2027-28 season, making it the first time in NHL history that a franchise is allowing its fanbase to design a sweater.
“Islanders fans are among the most passionate in all of sports, and their emotional investment is the heartbeat of this franchise,” said Kelly Cheeseman, president of business operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena in a statement.
“With this contest, we are breaking down traditional boundaries and inviting Isles Nation directly into the design room to do something that has never been done before in our league. Our Third Jersey will truly belong to the fans, born from their passion and chosen by their voice.”
New York missed the playoffs for a second straight year in 2025-26, finishing with a 43-34-5 record. The team replaced head coach Patrick Roy with Peter DeBoer with just four games left in the season to try to reach the playoffs, but went 1-3-0 under their new head coach.
Rookie defenceman Matthew Schaefer took home the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie after scoring 23 goals with 59 points in 82 games while averaging 24:41 of ice time.
