Connor Murphy’s time with the Edmonton Oilers will continue.
TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports the team is extending the defenceman on a five-year, $20.4 million deal, carrying a cap hit of $4.1 million.
The signing comes one day after the Oilers signed forward Jason Dickinson to a five-year, $20 million deal. Both Dickinson and Murphy were acquired in separate trades from the Chicago Blackhawks ahead of the trade deadline in March.
Murphy, 33, was acquired for 2028 second-round draft pick, while Dickinson was brought in along with forward Colton Dach, in exchange for forward Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional first-round draft pick in 2027.
Murphy had five goals and 17 points in 80 games split between the Blackhawks and Oilers. He added two goals and three points in six playoff games while averaging 21:17 of ice time as the Oilers fell in the first round.
The 6-foot-4, right-shot defenceman is coming off a four-year, $17.6 million contract that carries a cap hit of $4.4 million.
Drafted 20th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2011, Murphy has 48 goals and 177 points in 825 career games split between the Coyotes, Blackhawks, and Oilers.
The Dublin, Ohio native has represented the United States five times at the World Championship, taking home bronze medals in 2015 and 2018.
Dickinson had seven goals and 17 points in 64 games split between the Blackhawks and Oilers last season.
Dickinson added two goals and three points in four playoff games as the Oilers were eliminated in the first round.
