The Ottawa Senators announced on Thursday that captain Brady Tkachuk is out six to eight weeks after undergoing right thumb surgery.

Tkachuk was in New York on Wednesday morning getting a second opinion on the injury.

“It’s unfortunate. You never want to lose a player. You never want to lose a player of his stature,” Senators head coach Travis Green told the media on Tuesday. “That’s part of the game. We’re not going to sit and dwell on it. Like anyone else who gets hurt, you move on and you move on quickly. Brady will be around our team and be the captain that he is, but he won’t be playing.”

Tkachuk sustained the injury in the team’s 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Monday. It occurred when Tkachuk was cross checked into the boards in the first period.

Tkachuk, 26, has three points through three games this season. His 29 goals a season ago led all skaters on the Senators, and he has scored at least 29 goals in four consecutive seasons.

Tkachuk is in his eighth season with the Senators after being selected fourth overall by Ottawa in the 2018 NHL Draft.

The Senators are 1-3-0 on the season after an 8-4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. Ottawa will host the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.
