Matthew Schaefer, the first overall pick in June’s draft, will be a part of the New York Islanders opening night roster and make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said Monday that Schaefer has “completely earned spot on the roster and in the lineup,” per Arthur Gross of Newsday.

The 6-foot-2 left-shot defenceman appeared in only 17 games with the Erie Otters last season after sustaining a broken collarbone while representing Canada at the World Juniors in December.

The 18-year-old blueliner had seven goals and 22 points in 17 OHL games and had a goal and two points at the World Juniors.
