The Minnesota Wild have signed head coach John Hynes to a multi-year extension, the team announced Tuesday.
Hynes, 51, was set to enter the final year of his contract this season prior to the deal.
The Warwick, RI native has spent the past three years with the Wild since being tabbed to replace Dean Evason behind the bench on Nov. 27, 2023.
After a 5-10-4 start to the year ended Evason’s five-year stay with the team , Minnesota would pick things up under Hynes with a 34-24-5 record over their final 63 games of the season.
They would finish sixth in the Central Division that year, missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.
Since then, Hynes has led the Wild to the postseason in back-to-back years, also helping the franchise to their first playoff series win in 11 years with a six-game victory over the Dallas Stars this past spring.
He holds a coaching record of 125-78-24 with the Wild in his almost three years on the job.
Minnesota is Hynes’ third stop as an NHL head coach after he previously spent time behind the bench with the New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators.
He got his start as a head coach with the Devils ahead of the 2015-16 season, and held the job for almost five seasons before being fired 26 games into the 2019-20 campaign.
Hynes was then hired by the Predators a month later to take over for Peter Laviolette, where he would spend the next four years before his firing in May 2023.
The veteran coach holds a career record of 409-333-87 across his three stops in the NHL, making the playoffs six times in 11 seasons.
He also served as an assistant coach on Mike Sullivan’s staff at Milano Cortina 2026, winning the gold medal with a 2-1 win over Canada in the final.
The Wild are set to open camp on Thursday before dropping the puck on the preseason against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sept. 19.
