TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman asked Dylan Larkin’s camp to expand his approved trade list beyond the original three teams he gave.
LeBrun writes in The Athletic that his sense is Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, “was receptive to that to some degree“ and the list is believed to have been expanded. He notes that Yzerman and Brisson are working through the situation ”in a respectful manner.”
Larkin first submitted a list approving deals to the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights or Florida Panthers after requesting a trade last week. The 29-year-old centre holds a full no-move clause as part of his contract which runs through 2030-31 at a cap hit of $8.7 million.
LeBrun reports that the Dallas Stars are among the teams that have checked in, which is notable as extension talks continue with pending restricted free agent Jason Robertson.
There remains no firm timeline for when a Larkin trade could be completed, and LeBrun writes that a three-team trade could be an option to get Detroit the assets needed in a deal. He points to the Minnesota Wild as a team that may not have the pieces to fill Detroit’s needs but could be a fit for another franchise. Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt has been pointed as a possible trade chip for the team.
Larkin registered 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games this past season with the Red Wings. He also helped the United States claim gold at the Olympics in February, posting two goals and one assist in six games.
His best offensive season came during the 2022-23 campaign where he recorded 32 goals and 79 points in 80 games. He represented the Red Wings at the NHL All-Star Game three times in 2016, 2022, and 2023.
Drafted 15th overall by the Red Wings in 2014, Larkin has 276 goals and 643 points in 808 career games. He has reached the playoffs just once with Detroit, doing so as a rookie in 2015-16.
