Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators announced Thursday they have recalled goaltender Kevin Mandolese from the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League.

The move comes in the wake of Cam Talbot suffering a lower-body injury in the second period of Wednesday's game against the New York Islanders. He did not return and was replaced by Anton Forsberg as the Sens prevailed, winning 2-1.

Mandolese, a native of Blainville, Que., has played 12 games for the AHL's Senators, posting a record of 4-6-2. The 157th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft has a 3.39 goals-against average and a 0.886 save percentage.

TSN's Claire Hanna adds that Talbot will not be available till after the All-Star break (All-Star Skills on Feb. 3 and All-Star Game on Feb. 4) and Mads Sogaard, who has played 18 games for the AHL's Senators, is dealing with an injury.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal Canadiens forward Sean Monahan did not participate in Thursday's morning skate, according to TSN's Kenzie Lalonde.

Monahan, 28, was placed on long-term injured reserve earlier in January. The former Calgary Flame remains sidelined with a lower-body injury, but the team said he is continuing his on-ice rehab by himself and progressing well.

Monahan last played on Dec. 5, when he scored a goal and logged 10:15 minutes of ice time in a 7-6 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed to reporters that Jake Allen will get the start in net against the Detroit Red Wings.

Allen, 32, is 1-4 in his last five starts and 10-16-1 on the year with a 3.52 GAA and a .892 save percentage.

The Fredericton, N.B., native's last start was on Jan. 7 against the St. Louis Blues, when Allen stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced in a 5-4 win.'

Calgary Flames

Jacob Markstrom will get the start in net Thursday night for the Calgary Flames against the Detroit Red Wings, according to TSN's Salim Valji.

Markstrom's last start came on Jan. 18 against the defending Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, when the 32-year-old stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced.

The Gavle, Sweden, native has made 32 starts for the Flames this season, posting a 13-12-5 record. A former Vancouver Canuck and 2022 Second-Team All-Star in 2022, Markstrom has a 2.82 GAA and a .895 save percentage.

Washington Capitals

After missing the Washington Capitals' last game against the Colorado Avalanche, Caps forward Nicklas Backstrom provided an update on his status to reports saying, "(I'm) feeling better. Good to go."

The 35-year-old Sweden-born Backstrom last played on Jan. 21 against the Vegas Golden Knights, when he logged 15:25 minutes of ice time. Backstrom has played in seven games for the Capitals this season, having undergone off-season left hip resurfacing surgery on a nagging injury that had hampered his ability to skate.
