Nike, a brand that prides itself on innovation and sustainability, has revealed its latest take on renewable shoe technology in its latest shoe models, the Nike ISPA Link and Nike ISPA Link Axis.

ISPA, which stands for improvise, scavenge, protect and adapt is a Nike design philosophy that challenges creators to experiment, break molds and reimagine products, per a press release from the brand’s website.

The ISPA team has developed futuristic looking silhouettes that feature interlocking modules that are connected without glue or cement, and can be completely disassembled. The idea is that once the sneaker is disposed of, it can be easily broken down for recycling or reuse.

Various parts of the bases for each model are constructed from eco-friendly materials, including the Flyknit upper, which is derived from 100% recycled polyester and the TPU cages which are made from 20% recycled materials. They also include 100% recycled TPU tooling with Nike airbag scrap material along with 10% recycled EVA sockliners.

“This shoe has reduced emissions quite considerably in the process,'' said Darryl Matthews, Nike VP of product footwear design at an event to reveal the Serena Williams Building on Nike’s world headquarters. “It takes eight minutes to make a shoe, there’s no heat tunnels, there’s no cooling tunnels, there’s no glue lines. It’s our first step in understanding how we can get to a circular process of recyclability in footwear products.”

The Nike ISPA Link will arrive in June 2022, while the ISPA Link Axis will release sometime in 2023.
