After having a highway named in his honour two years ago, the Flower will now have a bridge named after him.
On Wednesday, the City of Montreal announced that the new bridge connecting Île Bizard to the Island of Montreal will be named the Guy Lafleur Bridge.
In May 2023, Premier François Legault travelled to Thurso, in the Outaouais region, the birthplace of the former Montreal Canadiens No. 10, to announce that Highway 50 would now be named the Guy Lafleur Highway.
On Wednesday, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante unveiled the name of the new bridge in the presence of Lafleur’s relatives and family members.
This distinction stems from the fact that the legendary hockey player lived on Île Bizard for nearly 30 years, where he was known as “an active and caring citizen,” according to Plante.
An unrivalled track record
The best junior player of his era with the Quebec Remparts, he was drafted by the Canadiens, with whom he dominated National Hockey League rinks for 14 seasons before retiring for the first time in 1984 after winning five Stanley Cups and numerous individual trophies.
To this day, he remains the Canadiens’ all-time leader in points and second-leading goal scorer behind another legend, Maurice Richard.
He returned to play in 1988 with the New York Rangers before joining the Quebec Nordiques in 1989, where he ended his career in 1991.
Lafleur passed away in April 2022 and was awarded the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.
The Canadiens retired his number 10 jersey, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame.
