Chris Armas’s time with the Colorado Rapids is over.
The team and the former Toronto FC manager mutually parted aways on Monday after the expiration of his contract.
Armas, 53, spent the past two years at the helm of the team and posted a record of 33W-36L-13D. The Rapids made the playoffs in 2024, but finished 11th in the West this past season to miss out on the postseason.
“We’re grateful to Chris for the professionalism and passion he brought to the club,” Rapids president Padraig Smith said in a statement. “He helped our group take meaningful steps forward over the past two seasons and leaves behind a strong culture that will serve us well as we begin this next chapter.”
A native of The Bronx, Armas spent 12 seasons in MLS as a player with the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, winning an MLS Cup with the latter in 1998. A midfielder, Armas was capped 66 times by the United States.
He began his coaching career in 2008 and became head coach of the New York Red Bulls in 2018 when Jesse Marsch left for Red Bull Salzburg. He would go on to lead the Red Bulls to the Supporters’ Shield later that year.
In 2021, Armas was named manager of TFC. His reign was a disastrous one, winning just two of his 15 matches in charge before being fired after only six months.
After stints as assistant manager at Manchester United under Ralf Rangnick and at Leeds, once again under Marsch, he returned to MLS with the Rapids in the fall of 2023.
