Dibu Martinez is on the move.
The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports the Argentina goalkeeper is set for a £7.5 million move to Chelsea from Aston Villa.
Martinez, 34 next week, became surplus to requirements at Villa Park following the arrival of Japan keeper Zion Suzuki from Parma.
A native of Mar del Plata, Martinez had spent the past six seasons with Villa, making 213 appearances. Martinez arrived from Arsenal in a £20 million move. He helped backstop the club to the Europa League title last spring.
A product of the Gunners academy, Martinez made his senior debut for the club in 2012. Martinez also had loan spells at Reading, Getafe and Wolves among other stops. He made 38 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal with 15 coming in the Premier League.
Internationally, Martinez has been capped 67 times by Argentina and served as their No. 1 in the past four major tournaments, including this summer’s World Cup. Martinez has won two Copas America and the 2022 World Cup with the Albiceleste. He won the Golden Glove in all three triumphs.
Martinez will now provide competition for Robert Sanchez. The Spain goalkeeper looked shaky in the team’s 3-2 season-opening victory over Fulham last weekend. The Blues are in League Cup action later on Thursday against Luton Town before taking on Brighton in Premier League play on Sunday.
