Niko Sigur is on the verge of completing a $6.5 million transfer from Croatia’s Hajduk Split to Toulouse in France on European soccer’s transfer deadline day, and will sign a four-year deal with the French club, multiple sources confirm to TSN.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder joins fellow Canadian Jacen Russell-Rowe, who joined the Ligue 1 team this past winter.
Toulouse tabled an offer to Hajduk last week, and as TSN reported, the Croatian side was initially slow to accept the offer.
Sigur’s move means he is the latest Canadian man this summer to leverage the country’s historic home World Cup tournament into a move to one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
The number of Canadian moves around Europe this summer is unprecedented.
Striker Promise David is now on loan with Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League, midfielder Nathan Saliba joined Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi at Villarreal, and Canadian vice-captain Stephen Eustáquio moved from Porto to Swansea City in the English Championship where midfielder Jayden Nelson now also plays with Bolton Wanderers.
And Monday reports emerged linking forward Jonathan David with a move from Juventus to Atlético Madrid.
