Theo Corbeanu has gone under the knife.
Toronto FC confirmed on Thursday that the 25-year-old winger underwent knee surgery and will be sidelined. It’s a second procedure in recent months for the player.
A native of Hamilton, Ont., Corbeanu posted a photo from his hospital bed on Wednesday.
“It’s been a tough couple of months,” Corbeanu wrote. “Surgery is now completed. Grind mode is fully activated. Can’t wait for the return back with the lads.”
Reds manager Robin Fraser addressed Corbeanu in his media availability ahead of Saturday’s match at Vancouver Whitecaps.
“My understanding is that it went really well,” Fraser said of the surgery. “I don’t know the details of what the exact surgery was, but it was an issue that he was having since the offseason that we tried to manage as well as we could. It just got to a point where it seemed that the suggestion was [surgery] was the best route to go.”
No timeline for Corbeanu’s recovery was given, but Fraser noted that his absence would be “more than a week or two.”
A member of the TFC academy, Corbeanu left for the Wolves academy in 2018. He made his Premier League debut in 2021 before successive loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons, Blackpool, Arminia Bielefeld and Grasshoppers. He would go on to join Granada on a permanent in 2024.
Corbeanu returned to Toronto on loan last season, appearing in 32 MLS contests and scoring six goals.
Internationally, Corbeanu has been capped seven times by Canada.
He did not feature in TFC’s season-opening 3-2 loss to FC Dallas last weekend.
