Heavyweights Portugal, Spain to meet in Round of 16 at FIFA World Cup

Published:

The knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup is heating up with several marquee matchups, perhaps none with as much star power as Portugal and Spain on Monday afternoon.

The two soccer heavyweights will go head to head next week on July 6 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as both nations eye the final eight.

You can watch that game LIVE on Monday at 2:45pm ET/11:45am PT across the TSN Network, on TSN.ca and the TSN App.

Spain was first to punch its ticket to the next stage, defeating Austria 3-0 Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles. A brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a goal from Pedro Porro put La Roja comfortably through to the Round of 16 for the third straight World Cup.

Spain collected seven of a possible nine points on their way to winning Group H and drawing Austria in the knockout stage, who finished second in Group J.

Also Thursday, Portugal narrowly survived Croatia 2-1 in Toronto in one of the best games of the tournament thus far. The Portuguese trailed 1-0 in the second half but a goal by Cristiano Ronaldo on a penalty kick -- his first ever in the World Cup knockout stage -- equalized and a picture-perfect header from Goncalo Ramos in the fourth minute of stoppage time gave Portugal the win.

Croatia looked to have tied things at the end of stoppage time, but VAR clawed back the equalizer for being offside.

Portugal drew twice and picked up one win during the preliminary round, finishing second in Group K behind Colombia.

According to FIFA, Spain is ranked No. 3 in the world while Portugal sits seventh.
