Shapovalov ousted by Shelton in US Open third round

Published:

Denis Shapovalov’s run at the US Open came to an end early Saturday morning after losing to Ben Shelton in four sets.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native fell 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-6), 3-6, 4-6 to end his run in New York City in the third round. The match last three hours and 22 minutes and finished just after 2:00 a.m. ET.

Shelton moves onto the Round of 16 with the victory, where he will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Shapovalov dropped the first set in a tiebreak but battled back to even things up with a hard-fought second-set tiebreak victory. However, the eighth-ranked Shelton turned up the heat in the third set and got another key break in the fourth to help close things out.

Shapovalov picked up wins over Miomir Kecmanović and Luca Van Assche in the first two rounds, respectively.

The 27-year-old Shapovalov wasn’t the only Canadian to head home in singles play on Day 6 at the tournament as Leylah Annie Fernandez fell 6-1, 4-6, 3-6 to Jessica Pegula earlier Friday.

There are now no Canadians left in singles play in Flushing, N.Y.
