Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey will compete in the WNBA’s three-point contest at All-Star Weekend in Chicago on Friday.
Mabrey is enjoying a career year this season, leading the Tempo with 21.6 points per game to earn honours as the expansion franchise’s first All-Star.
She tied the WNBA single-game record with 53 points in a win over the Los Angeles Sparks last month, knocking down 9-of-18 from three-point range.
The 29-year-old American also leads the WNBA with 82 made three-pointers while shooting 39.2 per cent from beyond the arc.
“I think it’s been a long time coming,” Mabrey told TSN of her season earlier this week. “I’ve put in a lot of work over the years. I played different roles in the league. I don’t know that I’ve had a green light like this in a long time.”
Mabrey also competed in the three-point contest as a member of the Connecticut Sun in 2024, won by Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray.
Mabrey was left unprotected by the Sun in the expansion draft, allowing the Tempo to add the veteran guard. Players around the league have taken notice at the improvements Mabrey has made in Toronto.
“Seeing her success has been a long time coming. I feel like she’s been underrated for a long time, and she’s put in a lot of work,” Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale said of Mabrey’s season.
“Marina’s ability to stretch the floor changes the game every time she steps on the court,” said Tempo general manager Monica Wright Rogers in a statement.
“She’s one of the most efficient deep range shooters in basketball, and this selection is another well-deserved recognition of the incredible season she’s having. We can’t wait to see her represent Toronto on one of the league’s biggest stages.”
Four-time all-star Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream, No. 1 overall draft pick Azzi Fudd of the Wings, Canadian Bridget Carleton of the Portland Fire, Natisha Hiedeman of the Seattle Storm and Janelle Salaun of the Golden State Valkyries will also compete in the 2026 event.
Carleton, who is from Chatham-Kent, Ont., has shot 37 per cent from three-point range for the expansion Fire this season, and ranks sixth in the league in three-pointers made with 67.
