Tempo’s Mabrey a late scratch vs. Mercury due to neck injury

Published:

Toronto Tempo star guard Marina Mabrey was a late scratch for Saturday’s game against the visiting Phoenix Mercury due to a neck injury.

The Tempo announced Mabrey was set to start just 30 minutes before tipoff, but experienced neck spasms during warmups and was pulled from the lineup.

Saturday’s game, a 89-80 loss for the Tempo to fall to 9-10 on the season, was played at Scotiabank Arena for the first time in history.

The Tempo were coming off a promising 125-97 rout of the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, highlighted by Mabrey trying an WNBA record with a 53-point performance.

Mabrey went 17-28 from the field, including an incredible 9-18 from behind the three-point line in 32 minutes of action.

The 29-year-old Notre Dame product has been one of the best players in the WNBA this season, the Tempo’s debut campaign in the WNBA.

Mabrey is averaging 21.2 points while owning a 45.9 field goal percentage and shooting 40.3 per cent from three.

Toronto is dealing with multiple injuries, including rookie Kiki Rice (ankle) and veteran guard Brittney Sykes (foot).
