The Winnipeg Blue Bombers took the practice field Tuesday in preparation for the team’s Week 7 matchup against the Ottawa Redblacks, with the quarterback situation being the focus.
After suffering an upper-body injury in the team’s 14-13 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 5, the 37-year-old Zach Collaros was ruled out for Winnipeg’s matchup against the Toronto Argonauts last week. It was the newly-acquired Dru Brown stepping in for the Bombers and leading the team to the win.
Now to begin Week 7, Collaros is back practicing and in full gear, but it’s Brown taking the first-team reps, according to Blue Bombers reporter Ed Tait.
In his first start of the season last week, Brown performed well. The 29-year-old completed 25-of-31 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown, leading Winnipeg to the 30-21 win.
It remains to be seen who will start for the Blue Bombers come Sunday against the Redblacks, but if it is Brown, he will be going up against the team that just traded him.
Brown spent the first three seasons of his CFL career with the Blue Bombers before joining the Redblacks in 2024. After starting the past two seasons in Ottawa, Brown became disgruntled and requested a trade out of the nation’s capital when the team brought in Jake Maier this past offseason and subsequently named him the Week 1 starter.
Brown threw for 2,389 yards in 11 games in the nation’s capital last season, with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
