A third of the season has come and gone in the Canadian Football League as Week 8 has arrived.
It’s four games across four days north of the border on TSN, and the week starts with a bang on Thursday with a battle for first place in the West between the Edmonton Elks and Saskatchewan Roughriders from the Queen City.
On Friday, another Alberta team hits the road as the Calgary Stampeders travel to take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, before the Toronto Argonauts travel to take on the BC Lions in the finale of their season-opening seven-game road trip.
Then, the week wraps up with an East Final rematch from a year ago as the Montreal Alouettes play host to the Tiger-Cats on Sunday.
Elks vs. Roughriders
Mosaic Stadium plays host to what is the marquee matchup of Week 8 as the Elks (5-1) and Roughriders (4-1) battle to be the best in the West.

Expect this one to be physical, both in the trenches and in the open field. Both teams bring a mean streak and talent on both sides of the line, while having players in the back seven who love to fly around. These defences are No.1 and No.2 in net offence allowed, so how each offence gets their game off will be fascinating to watch.
Both of these defences are particularly elite at defending the pass, with playmakers littered across both secondaries. The Roughriders had some trouble against the CFL’s run-heaviest team in the Stamps in Week 3, barely squeaking out a 40-37 win.
Though they do it in a different way, the Elks are right there in terms of leaning on the ground game and efficiency, with potential Most Outstanding Player candidate Justin Rankin leading the way. The CFL’s big-play and touchdown leader is averaging a league-leading 7.1 yards per carry, and if Edmonton can get close to that number despite dealing with some injuries up front, they should be in good shape.
Edmonton is definitely the more banged up team at the moment, with impact players like linebacker Nick Anderson and defensive tackle Jordan Williams, plus multiple offensive linemen, among others, on the six-game.
The Elks have filled those spots nicely defensively, but they’ll be going up against a balanced and efficient Saskatchewan offence led by the deadly accurate Trevor Harris, a three-headed monster at receiver, and a mauling run game that features a star-studded offensive line and the bashing A.J. Ouellette.
One more thing to note: Edmonton is averaging nearly four turnovers forced per game, while Saskatchewan has been one of the best teams at taking care of the ball. Something’s got to give.
Get your popcorn ready, this will be a good one.
Stampeders vs. Blue Bombers
Friday Night Football features another all-West battle between two teams going in different directions in the Stampeders (2-4) and Blue Bombers (4-2).

Winnipeg is riding a three-game win streak and will try to make it four in a row in front of a home crowd at Princess Auto Stadium, while the Stamps will try to stop a two-game skid.
You could say this is a battle of a team whose defence has led the way while the offence has lagged behind (Winnipeg), against a team whose offence is firing on all cylinders but the defence has been subpar (Calgary).
That’s true for the most part as the Stamps’ defence has severely let the team down given the offence’s fantastic start. Calgary is taking the most penalties and allowing the most points, passing yards, and net offence per game, while being bottom three in big plays allowed and turnovers forced.
It’s a completely different story for their offence, as quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and running back Dedrick Mills have the unit humming. The team leads the league in points for (37.7) and rushing yards per game (125.3), while Adams’ 17-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio has tied Ricky Ray for the league’s all-time longest touchdown streak without an interception to start a season.
Winnipeg’s defence has largely been a top-half-of-the-league unit to begin 2026, though they are much better at defending the pass than the run, something to note given Calgary’s dominant ground attack. But the offence has turned a corner over the past two weeks since Dru Brown took over.
The Bombers are 2-0 since the 29-year-old stepped in and are averaging 10.7 more points, 60.2 passing yards, and 39.7 net yards per game with Brown at the helm.
Brown has been performing better than Zach Collaros was and the Stampeders are very prone to being beat by the pass, but Winnipeg’s run defence will be tested against Mills and this elite run game.
Argonauts vs. Lions
Saturday features two teams from looking to get back on track in the Argonauts (2-4) and Lions (1-4).

There are a lot of reasons for BC’s 1-4 start – the team has forced the least amount of turnovers, has made the least amount of sacks, has allowed the most sacks, and has a bottom two run game.
Nathan Rourke’s play was not one of those reasons for the poor start, but they’ll have to try and climb out of it without the star quarterback, at least for a little bit.
On the second offensive snap in the team’s 19-17 loss to the Elks last week, the reigning Most Outstanding Player and Canadian suffered a non-throwing shoulder injury after being taken down for a sack. According to TSN’s Farhan Lalji, it will keep the 28-year-old out for multiple weeks.
Stepping in to replace Rourke was fourth-year backup Chase Brice. In relief, the 28-year-old went 20-of-34 for 226 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions. While it was a less-than-ideal showing for Brice, he was thrown into a tough situation and had only made seven scattered appearances for the Lions previously. A full week of preparation as the starter will certainly help his and BC’s potential offensive outlook this week and moving forward.
The one other positive outside of Rourke has been the team’s ability to defend the run and get penetration. The talented front seven leads the CFL in tackles for loss and rushing yards allowed, though it remains to be seen how much that will matter against this Argonauts team.
Toronto has the second fewest number of rushing attempts and the second most passing attempts, as Chad Kelly has been throwing the ball all over the place to his talented receiving group. The team is averaging the most passing yards per game and has the most big plays.
BC, who is the far more injured team on both sides of the ball, will have to figure out how to slow down this Argos’ passing offence, while putting Brice in the best position to succeed on the other side of the ball.
Tiger-Cats vs. Alouettes
The week wraps up on Sunday with how the 2026 season started, an East Final rematch from a year ago between the Alouettes (5-1) and Tiger-Cats (3-3).

It’s hard to take much from the teams’ Week 1 matchup, given how differently the Tiger-Cats look nearly two months later.
Back-to-back MOP runner-up Bo Levi Mitchell has since gone down and the team has turned to both Jake Dolegala and, most recently, Canadian Tre Ford, while also bringing in two other pivots.
There were encouraging signs for Hamilton last week as Ford had a positive outing and helped stop a Ticats two-game slide.
The 28-year-old national completed 77.8 per cent of his passes for 218 yards and one touchdown, while adding 109 rushing yards along the ground. While it officially remains to be seen who gets the start for head coach Scott Milanovich’s squad, all signs are pointing to Ford getting the nod once again.
Hamilton’s defence has also been a big reason the team has been able to stay afloat in the wake of Michell’s injury, with the team sitting in the top half of the league in most defensive categories, including leading in sacks.
They’ll be going up against a different beast in Week 8, however, as they’ll be taking on arguably the best team in the league in the Alouettes who boast arguably the best quarterback north of the border in Davis Alexander.
The 27-year-old is among the league leaders in many categories with his 2,181 passing yards (first), 71.3 completion percentage, 11 touchdowns, and zero interceptions, all while fighting through a nagging hamstring injury.
With two fantastic receivers in Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead, a mauling offensive line, and a physical running back in Travis Theis around him, Hamilton, like the rest of the league, will have their hands full.
