The league-leading Montreal Alouettes are on the verge of becoming the first team in the CFL to clinch a playoff spot this season.
The 9-2 Alouettes can book their spot in the postseason alongside the right to host a playoff game with a road win over the BC Lions on Friday night or with the Toronto Argonauts defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Labour Day Classic on Monday.
The Alouettes suffered a 44-28 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week, their first defeat since a 32-29 loss to the Edmonton Elks on June 20.
Montreal fell to the Saskatchewan Roughriders 25-17 in last year’s Grey Cup.
Quarterback Davis Alexander and Canadian wide receiver Tyson Philpot have been a dynamic duo this season for the Als.
Alexander, 27, leads the CFL with 3,657 passing yards and 24 touchdowns and sits second with a 125.3 quarterback rating.
Philpot, 26, is the league leader in receptions (90), receiving yards (1,316) and touchdowns (10).
Montreal’s ground attack has been effective as well with running back Travis Theis rushing for 819 yards, third best in the CFL.
Including Friday’s tilt against BC, Montreal has seven games left in the regular season, leaving them plenty of time to clinch a playoff spot if they don’t do it in Week 14.
