The PGA Tour bids farewell to the Lone Star State this weekend as the Charles Schwab Challenge gets set to tee off from Colonial Country Club.
Colonial is one of the longest-running stops on Tour, with the first playing at the Dallas-area course coming all the way back in 1946.
This year, Colonial will host the 80th playing of the event as the stakes will be raised this time around with a number of players vying for qualification into next week’s Memorial Tournament and the U.S. Open next month.
Tony Finau and Max Homa are among the names currently on the outside looking in of the top 60 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and will likely need to string together multiple good weeks to earn an automatic qualification.
Finau, currently ranked 103rd in the world, appears to be trending in the right direction following his first top-10 finish of the year at last week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
The six-time PGA Tour winner moved up 17 spots in the OWGR thanks to his efforts at TPC Craig Ranch, but has almost no room for error over the next three weeks if he wants to earn a tee time at Shinnecock.
Homa faces an even more difficult path than Finau, needing to move up 63 spots over the next three weeks to earn an automatic qualification at the U.S. Open.
After showing flashes of his old self with a T9 at the Masters, Homa has recorded finishes of T69, T38, T52 before missing the cut altogether at the PGA Championship.
Now at 123rd in the world, Homa will likely need at least one win and two weeks of contention to get anywhere close to the cutoff at Shinnecock.
Homa lost in a playoff during last year’s U.S. Open Final Qualifying, and will look to get round his game into shape to avoid having to take part in Golf’s Longest Day this time around.
Also in the field this week are Ludvig Aberg, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Russell Henley, and defending champion Ben Griffin, who held off Matti Scmid for a one-stroke victory last year.
There will also be four Canadians teeing it up with A.J. Ewart, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Svensson, and Sudarshan Yellamaraju all in the field this week.
Ewart logged his fourth T20 of the season last week at the Byron Nelson, firing rounds of 66-67-70-66, The Coquitlam, B.C. native is still searching for some consistency in his rookie season after missing the cut in three of his past seven starts, but it was a positive sign for Ewart last week with his best finish on Tour since March.
Hughes squandered an opening-round 65 at TPC Craig Ranch last week, and finished in 66th following weekend rounds of 72 and 71. The Dundas, Ont. native was just four shots back of the lead after Thursday’s round, but faded out of contention to finish four shots out of last place.
Svennson, of Surrey, B.C., has quietly made four consecutive cuts on Tour dating back to the Valero Texas Open, but is still looking for his first top 20 of the year through 11 starts.
He earned himself a T54 last week, firing three rounds under par to get to 10-under for the tournament.
Yellamaraju has not quite been able to find his game after posting T5 and T6 finishes in back-to-back weeks at the Players and the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March.
Hailing from Mississauga, Ont., Yellamaraju had his streak of 11 consecutive made cuts snapped at the PGA Championship and will now look to rebound in a big way at Colonial after taking last week off.
