The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired right-hander Jameson Taillon and cash from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, it was announced Sunday afternoon.
The move comes with just over 24 hours to go until Monday’s 6:00 p.m. ET trade deadline and could signify the Blue Jays intend on trading at least one member of their starting rotation before then. Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer are all scheduled to be free agents at the end of the season.
Taillon was designated for assignment earlier this week after struggling in 15 starts. A 10-year MLB veteran, Taillon has a 5.92 ERA with a WHIP of 1.35 and 68 strikeouts in 76.0 innings.
Taillon represented Canada at the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was born in Florida and attended high school in Texas, but has dual citizenship because both of his parents were born and raised in Canada.
The 34-year-old has a career ERA of 3.99 in 239 big-league appearances, 238 of them starts.
He is in the final year of a four-year, $68 million deal with a price tag of $18 million this season.
