The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled IF/OF Davis Schneider and left-handed pitcher Brendan Cellucci from Triple-A ahead of Monday’s series-opener against the Detroit Tigers, the team announced.
Lefty reliever Ricky Tiedemann was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, while outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain, retroactive to Sept. 13.
Schneider will return for his fifth stint with the major-league club after he started the season on the Opening Day roster.
The fourth-year player has struggled this year, compiling a .142/.295/.274 slash line with three home runs and 12 runs batted in across 62 games played.
In 52 games with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season, Schneider has hit .220 with a shocking .450 on-base percentage thanks to his 57 walks in 218 plate appearances.
Cellucci is slated to make his MLB debut after spending parts of the past seven seasons in the Boston Red Sox’ minor-league system. He has an earned-run average of 3.06 in 46 appearances out of the bullpen split between the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher-Cats and the Bisons.
The Blue Jays open this series against the Tigers at 75-75, one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final spot in the American League wild-card chase.
