Nick Castellanos’s time with the San Diego Padres is at an end.

The team designated the veteran outfielder/first baseman for assignment on Wednesday.

Castellanos, 34, was in his first season with the team following four years with the Philadelphia Phillies, who released him during spring training. A native of Hialeah, FL, Castellanos appeared in 39 games for the Friars. He was batting .191 with 22 hits, four home runs, 20 runs batted in and an OPS of .560 in 115 at-bats.

In a corresponding move, the Padres announced the recall of infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor from Triple-A El Paso. Taylor, 27, was previously in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system. Acquired from Cleveland as part of the Joe Smith trade in 2017, he was traded in 2022 to the Kansas City Royals as part of trade that saw Whit Merrifield go the other way.

Castellanos is in his 14th MLB season, having also spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. A two-time All-Star, Castellanos is a career .270 hitter with 1,764 hits, 254 home runs, 940 RBI and an OPS of .781 in 1,727 career games.
