Trei Cruz is about to be a third-generation major leaguer.

ABC 7’s Ari Alexander reports the Detroit Tigers are set to recall the Toronto-born infielder/outfielder from Triple-A Toledo.

The 27-year-old Cruz is the son of former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. and the grandson of Houston Astros legend Jose Cruz.

Cruz has appeared in 33 games for the Mudhens this season, batting .228 with 28 hits, two home runs, 16 runs batted in and an OPS of .660.

Cruz was originally a third-round selection by the Tigers in the 2020 MLB Amateur Draft out of Rice.

Cruz’s father appeared in 1,388 games over 12 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Astros from 1997 to 2008.

The elder Jose Cruz had a 19-year career, was twice an All-Star and finished third in American League Most Valuable Player voting in 1979. He appeared in 2,353 games with the St. Louis Cardinals, Astros and New York Yankees from 1970 to 1988.
