Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar will not make the team’s upcoming two-game road trip to Calgary and Edmonton due to a facial injury he sustained during Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Bednar was injured after taking a puck to the face early in the third period off the stick of Golden Knights defenceman Keegan Kolesar.

The 54-year-old coach sustained facial fractures and a corneal abrasion on the play. He does not require surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

Assistant coaches Dave Hakstol and Nolan Pratt will coach the team against the Flames and Oilers on Monday and Tuesday.

Colorado locked up the Presidents’ Trophy this season with a 52-16-11 record, seven point ahead of the Dallas Stars.

Bednar has a career 442-262-75 record in his 10 seasons coaching the Avalanche and helped lead the team to a 2022 Stanley Cup championship.

Colorado finishes the regular season on Thursday at home against the Seattle Kraken with the playoffs slated to begin on April 18.
