The Washington Capitals have signed head coach Spencer Carbery to a multi-year contract extension, it was announced Thursday morning.
Carbery is coming off a 2025-26 campaign where his team went 43-40-9, missing the playoffs by four points.
The 44-year-old coach just wrapped up his third season coaching the Capitals and has a 134-83-29 record during his tenure with two playoff appearances.
“We are pleased to extend Spencer to a new multi-year contract,” said senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick in a news release.
“Since joining our organization, Spencer has played an important role in the development of many of our young players while also earning the respect and trust of our veteran leaders. His communication skills, strong relationship-building, and ability to connect with players at every stage of their careers have made him a great leader of our club. In addition, he has helped foster a positive and accountable culture within our team, creating an environment where players can grow and succeed. We have been extremely impressed with his commitment, professionalism, and passion for coaching, and we are excited to see him continue building on that success.”
He led the Capitals to the NHL’s second-best record in 2024-25 with a 51-22-9 record to claim the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The team’s performance was a 20-point improvement from the year before, and he won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year for his efforts.
Prior to joining the Capitals, he worked two seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs under head coach Sheldon Keefe.
Carbery also served as the head coach of the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ AHL affiliate, from 2018 to 2021. He won the Pieri Award as the AHL’s coach of the year after leading the Bears to the AHL’s best record in the regular season.
The Victoria, B.C., native also served as head coach for the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit during the 2016-17 campaign.
