The New York Islanders have re-signed pending unrestricted free agent defenceman Tony DeAngelo to a two-year, $9 million contract that carries a cap hit of $4.5 million.
DeAngelo, 30, played last season with the Islanders, recording five goals and 35 points in 76 games while averaging 19:08 of ice time.
The 6-foot, right-shot blueliner is coming off a one-year, $1.75 million contract.
Drafted 19th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014, DeAngelo has 57 goals and 264 points in 482 career games split between the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, and Islanders.
The Sewell, N.J., native represented the United States at the 2015 World Juniors in a fifth-place finish.
Negotiating with Lee
The Islanders also continue to have a dialogue going with pending unrestricted free agent and team captain Anders Lee, according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.
Lee, 35, had 19 goals and 42 points in 82 games with the New York Islanders last season.
The 6-foot-3 winger was and is coming off a seven-year, $49 million contract that carried a cap hit of $7 million.
LeBrun reported on June 3 that Lee is preparing to head to the open market with the two sides far apart in negotiations.
Lee is expected to be one of the top unrestricted free agents available on July 1, ranked No. 14 on TSN Hockey’s Top 30 UFA list on June 1. Other top players have already been taken off the board with Darren Raddysh, Alex Tuch, Bobby McMann, Jason Dickinson, and Connor Murphy signing contracts.
