League-leading Avalanche rally late to roll past Flames

Published:

CALGARY — Gabriel Landeskog scored the go-ahead goal at 15:07 of the third period on Tuesday night to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-1 NHL victory over the Calgary Flames.

Artturi Lehkonen and Nathan Mackinnon, with his league-leading 53rd goal into an empty net, also scored for Colorado (54-16-11). Calgary native, Cale Makar, back in the Avalanche’s lineup after missing seven games with an upper-body injury, assisted on all three goals.

The Avs won their final eight road games of the season and were 14-1-0 in their last 15 away from Ball Arena. Colorado’s 29-7-5 road mark on the season is a franchise best. Their 119 points in 81 games ties the franchise record set in 2021-22.

Blake Coleman, with his 20th goal, scored for Calgary (33-39-9). The Flames eight-game (7-0-1) home-ice point streak came to an end.

MacKenzie Blackwood made 30 saves for the win. He improved to 23-10-2.

Dustin Wolf made 36 saves for the Flames and falls to 23-29-3.

After a scoreless first period, Calgary opened the scoring 7:22 into the second period when Coleman — while being knocked down from behind — was still able to get his stick on Mikael Backlund’s low shot, deflecting it straight up under the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Colorado drew even when Lehkonen broke in off the far boards and buried Cale Makar’s perfect cross-ice pass from the opposite corner.

TAKEAWAYS

Avalanche: Having played Monday in Edmonton, Colorado rested veterans Brock Nelson and Devon Toews. Nazem Kadri (finger) also did not play, but they showed the former Flame in street clothes on the scoreboard during the first TV timeout and as he smiled and gave the heart-hands gesture in response to the loud ovation he received.

Flames: Matt Coronato, riding a five-game point streak, did not play. Coach Ryan Huska said he was “banged up.” Veteran Ryan Strome also was a healthy scratch. Called up from the AHL and inserted into the lineup was centre Rory Kerins, playing his eighth career NHL game.

KEY MOMENT

The score was still tied 1-1 into the final five minutes of the third period when Makar sent a pass across to Brett Kulak, whose shot deflected in off Landeskog in front.

KEY STATS

Colorado has won five games in a row at the Scotiabank Saddledome and is 10-0-1 in its last 11 games against the Flames. … Centre Martin Necas was credited with an assist on MacKinnon’s empty-net goal, giving him 100 points on the season.
