Maple Leafs trade RFA Robertson to Penguins; Pittsburgh adds van Riemsdyk

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded restricted free agent forward Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2028 fourth-round pick.

Pittsburgh also signed defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk on Wednesday on the opening day of free agency.

Robertson, 24, had 16 goals and 32 points in 78 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.

The 5-foot-9 winger is coming off a one-year, $1.825 million contract.

Drafted 53rd overall by the Maple Leafs in 2019, Robertson has 48 goals and 88 points in 234 career games.

The Pasadena, Cali., native represented the United States at the 2020 World Juniors in a sixth-place finish.

Penguins add Trevor van Riemsdyk

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed unrestricted defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a contract, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnson.

Van Riemsdyk, 34, had three goals and 11 points in 68 games with the Washington Capitals last season while averaging 16:14 of ice time.

The 6-foot-3, right-shot defenceman is coming off a three-year, $9 million contract that carried a cap hit of $3 million.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2014, van Riemsdyk has 28 goals and 161 points in 751 career games split between the Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Capitals.

Van Riemsdyk helped the Blackhawks win their third Stanley Cup in six seasons in 2015, appearing in four playoff games.

The Middletown, N.J., native represented the United States at the 2017 World Hockey Championship in a fifth-place finish.
