Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Auston Matthews remains day-to-day and is “coming along” in his recovery from a lower-body injury that has sidelined him for the past week, said general manager Brad Treliving.
“I would suspect Thursday’s probably not a possibility... I don’t anticipate too, too long,” the Leafs GM told reporters at his quarter-season media availability Tuesday morning.

Toronto hosts the St. Louis Blues Tuesday and the Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday. They then make the trip to Montreal to take on the Canadiens Saturday evening.
Matthews was skating prior to the team’s session Tuesday for the first time since leaving last Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins with the injury in the second period.
Leafs head coach Craig Berube previously said Matthews was expected to miss about a week. The 28-year-old Matthews has tallied nine goals and five assists over 17 games prior to missing time.
Tanev skates Tuesday
Defenceman Chris Tanev was also on the ice prior to the team’s skate as he continues to work his way back from an upper-body injury. He was stretchered off the ice in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 1 and spent the night in hospital, but was discharged the next day. The Maple Leafs placed him on the injured reserve list on Nov. 2.
Treliving told reporters there is no timeline yet for Tanev, but the team expects to know more in the next week or so.
