Retired NHL forward Ray Whitney is taking up coaching and set to serve as an assistant for the Los Angeles Kings under new head coach Peter Laviolette, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.
The 54-year-native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., retired in 2014 after a 22-year NHL career, highlighted by helping the Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup in 2006.
Whitney played for Laviolette during Carolina’s first Stanley Cup-winning season in 2005-06.
Laviolette, 61, replaced Jim Hiller as Los Angeles’ head coach earlier this month after a mediocre 2025-26 campaign in which the Kings made the playoffs with just 35 wins and 90 points. They were swept in the opening round by the Colorado Avalanche.
Selected by the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the 1991 NHL Draft, Whitney produced 385 goals and 679 assists over 1,330 career games spent with the Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Hurricanes, Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars.
Whitey was a two-time All-Star in his career.
