A fifth-place finish in Serie A means the end of Max Allegri’s run at Milan.
The Rossoneri sacked their manager on Monday, a day after a 2-1 loss to Cagliari meant Milan missed out on Champions League qualification.
Allegri’s dismissal was one of a number of changes in management as ownership, Redbird Capital, also announced the firings of chief executive officer Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
“After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A,” the team said in a statement. “For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto. The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure.”
The loss to Cagliari, coupled with Como’s 4-1 win over relegated Cremonense, meant that Milan was pipped to a top-four finish and now will compete in the Europa League next season. After a run of four straight seasons in Europe’s top club competition, Milan has now missed out on the Champions League in two campaigns in a row.
A native of Livorno, the 58-year-old Allegri was in his second stint as Rossoneri boss and it ends after a single season. He previously led the club to the 2011 Scudetto during his 2010 to 2014 reign.
Allegri also won five Scudetti and five Coppas Italia over eight seasons at the helm of Juventus over two stints
