Nico Gonzalez is headed south.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Chris Waugh report the midfielder is set to join Newcastle from Manchester City in a move totaling £52 million.
Nico, 24, spent the past two seasons with City after a £50 million move from Porto. He appeared in 41 games across all competitions last season. He finishes his City tenure with a League Cup and FA Cup.
A native of A Coruna, Spain, Nico is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. He made his senior debut for the Blaugrana in 2021. After a season on loan with Valencia, Gonzalez joined Porto in 2023.
Internationally, Nico has represented Spain at both the U17 and U21 levels.
The move for Gonzalez continues a busy offseason for the Magpies. Along with the departure of manager Eddie Howe, Anthony Gordon (Barcelona), Bruno Guimaraes (Arsenal) and Sandro Tonali (Tottenham Hotspur) have all left the club. Amar Dedic, Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba are among those who have joined the club under new gaffer Matthias Jaissle.
Newcastle is coming off of a season-opening draw with Liverpool on Sunday. Toon is back in action on Wednesday with a visit from West Brom in League Cup play. They next see Premier League action on Saturday with a visit to Spurs.
