Chucky Lozano’s move from San Diego FC is finally at hand.
The LA Galaxy is finalizing a deal to sign the 31-year-old Mexico winger on loan, The Athletic’s Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio report.
The move comes almost a full year after the player’s high-profile falling out with manager Mikey Varas.
San Diego’s marquee signing ahead of their expansion season, Lozano scored nine goals and added 10 assists in 27 league matches for the club last season. During an October game against the Houston Dynamo, Lozano was lifted at halftime. The substitution led to an altercation between player and manager and Lozano has not played for the club since. In January, the team’s sporting director, Tyler Heaps, confirmed that Lozano was not in the club’s plans moving forward.
The Athletic notes that Lozano will be a Designated Player with the Galaxy.
Prior to returning to North America with San Diego, Lozano had two stints at PSV and spent four seasons at Napoli with whom he won a Coppa Italia and Scudetto.
Internationally, the Mexico City native has been capped 75 times by El Tri since his senior debut in 2016. He has 18 goals in a Mexico shirt. Having appeared at two World Cups, Lozano was not in the El Tri squad at this summer’s tournament largely due to his complete lack of game action.
The Galaxy currently sit 12th in the Western Conference on 22 points, one point ahead of San Diego. They trail the Seattle Sounders by two points for the final playoff spot in the West. The team returns to action on Saturday with a visit to the Dynamo.
