Former United States forward Abby Wambach became the first athlete to join the mass exodus of clients from the Wasserman Agency following agency head Casey Wasserman’s appearance in the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Wasserman also serves as the chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
“I have left the Wasserman Agency,” Wambach wrote on Instagram. “I read Casey Wasserman’s correspondences in the Epstein files. I know what I know, and I am following my gut and my values. I will not participate in any business arrangement under his leadership. I also need to say this: I’m grateful to my agent, who I’ve known for almost 20 years and trust. Casey should resign. He should leave, so more people like me don’t have to. I am unclear of my next steps. That’s OK with my, I just know where I can’t be.”
A 45-year-old native of Rochester, NY, Wambach is the USWNT’s all-time leading scorer with 184 goals in 255 appearances over a 15-year senior career. She retired in 2015 having won two Olympic gold medals and the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
Wasserman is not accused of any wrongdoing, but shared correspondences with Epstein’s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, conspiracy to transport minors to participate in illegal sex acts, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts, sex trafficking conspiracy, and sex trafficking of a minor.
Wasserman released a statement on Jan. 31 apologizing for his association with Maxwell, stating “I never had a personal or business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.”
Among those in other fields who cut ties with Wasserman in recent days include Chappell Roan, Bethany Cosentino, Weyes Blood and Orville Peck.
