Lukaku, Belgium salvages draw with Egypt in World Cup opener

Published:

Belgium and Egypt opened their FIFA World Cup tournament with a 1-1 draw Monday afternoon in Seattle.

Egypt, looking for their first World Cup win ever, led into the middle of the second half until Belgium equalized off an own goal from Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute. Romelu Lukaku, who was subbed in almost right before the score, put pressure on the Egyptian back line with a run into the box and forced the own goal to tie things up.

Lukaku came in for Charles De Ketelaere in the 66th minute.

Egypt opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Emam Ashour found a gap in the Belgian defence and ripped a strike into the back corner of the net past famed Red Devils keeper Thibaut Courtois.

The draw earns each side one point in Group G. Iran and New Zealand, also in Group G, will play the final match of the day Monday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Earlier on Monday, Cabo Verde drew with Spain in Atlanta in possibly the most shocking result of the tournament so far.
