Report: Bombito to remain on CanMNT roster

Published:

Canada has a 3 PM et deadline to make any adjustments to its FIFA World Cup roster, but one isn’t forthcoming in regards to Moïse Bombito.

OneSoccer’s Kristian Jack reports the Nice centre-back will remain in the 26-man squad despite lingering concerns over his recovery from a broken tibia.

Bombito’s inclusion closes the door on Vancouver Whitecaps centre-back Ralph Priso coming into the squad.

A 26-year-old Montreal native, Bombito broke his leg during an October draw with Monaco. His recovery was complicated with the New Hampshire product missing the remainder of the Ligue 1 season. He made his return to action earlier this month in Canada’s 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Edmonton, but was forced off after only 31 minutes, limping to the back in obvious discomfort. After missing out in last Friday’s Ireland friendly, Bombito played a half-hour in a closed-door scrimmage last weekend.

Bombito is one of four centre-backs on the roster along with Derek Cornelius, Alfie Jones and Luc de Fougerolles. Joel Waterman is also capable of playing in central defence.

Canada opens up its tournament on Friday at Toronto Stadium against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
