Lamine Yamal is taking the next step in his recovery from a hamstring injury as he has returned to regular training on Thursday, according to Fabrizio Romano
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said last week that he expected Yamal to be fit for the team’s World Cup opener against Cabo Verde on Monday.
The 18-year-old sustained the injury on April 22 while with Barcelona and did not play in Spain’s warmup match against Iraq last week.
“If nothing changes, he could be ready to play on June 15,” De la Fuente said last Wednesday. “It doesn’t mean that for sure he will play, we’ll see. Maybe a few minutes, maybe just practice so he can improve his condition for the second match. We will have to evaluate.”
Yamal became the youngest player to debut and score with the Spanish senior squad as a 16-year-old in 2023. One year later, he led Spain to a European Championship and was named the tournament’s best player.
Spain’s other group matches will be against Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay on June 26 as La Roja will look to advance pas the round of 16 for the first time since sinning the World Cup in 2010.
