Expert Analysis from TSN’s Cathy Gauthier

Team Skrlik will have a successful week at the Canadian Curling Trials if...

“The 2024-25 version of Team Skrlik is on the ice. This season has been bumpy. A conservative approach in games early is needed to find success.”

Team Story

Calgary’s Team Kayla Skrlik has struggled to find their groove this season as they enter the biggest event of their lives.

The defending Alberta champions are seven games under the .500 mark, losing 10 straight contests over a tough three-event stretch, which included the PointsBet Invitational sandwiched between two Grand Slams.

Team Skrlik is also 1-9 this season against teams they will see in Halifax and own the worst overall record out of all the women’s teams competing at the Trials.

They do enter the Canadian Curling Trials on a bit of high note after winning the Clarion Cup bonspiel last week, marking their first playoff appearance this season.

Despite the overall sub-par results, Team Skrlik has shown they have what it takes to be competitive in the past.

The rink had a strong week at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last winter, posting a 6-2 record to advance to the playoffs before dropping a close 8-7 game to Nova Scotia’s Team Christina Black in the 3 vs. 4-page playoff.

Team Skrlik had a great 2024-25 season overall, qualifying for six finals and winning the Alberta provincial title. They finished third on the CTRS, earning themselves an automatic entry into the 2026 Scotties.

This will be the first Olympic Trials for all four members of Team Skrlik. Alternate Crystal Webster skipped a team at the 2009 Trials and finished with a 2-5 record.

The Skrlik sisters and Geri-Lynn Ramsey have played together since the 2021-22 season while Margot Flemming joined the squad ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Time will tell if they’re able to turn their season around on a dime and fight for a playoff spot at the Canadian Curling Trials.
