The Carolina Hurricanes extended captain Jordan Staal to a one-year, $4.9 million contract and holds $5.1 million in possible performance bonuses.
Staal, 38, registered 20 goals and 36 points in 75 games with the Hurricanes last season. He added eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games as the Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup since 2006.
The 6-foot-4 centre recorded six goals and seven points in the Stanley Cup Final to capture the Conn Smythe Trophy.
“Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization,” said general manager Eric Tulsky in a statement. “His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.”
Staal is in the final season of a $11.68 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $2.92 million. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the up coming season and his new deal will kick in for the 2027-28 campaign.
Drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006, Staal has 318 goals and 747 points in 1,403 career games split between the Penguins and Hurricanes.
Considered as one of the top defensive forwards in the NHL, Staal finished as a finalist for the Selke Trophy in 2010 and 2024.
The Thunder Bay, Ont., native represented Canada twice at the World Hockey Championship, taking home gold in 2007.
