Christian Eriksen’s time in Germany is over.
Wolfsburg announced on Thursday that the Denmark midfielder has departed the club by mutual consent.
Eriksen, 34, last played for the club in May. He has not played since collapsing during a Denmark friendly against Ukraine in June. The incident brought back worrying memories of the cardiac arrest he incurred during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021.
The native of Middelfart had been contracted through June.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said in a statement. “I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead.”
Eriksen, who previously played for Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter and Manchester United, appeared in 31 league games for the team last season. He scored three times.
“It was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” Wolfsburg manager director Dieter Hecking said in a statement. “We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract. Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans.”
Eriksen has been capped 151 times by Denmark.
