Jannik Sinner announced on Friday that he will not compete at the US Open as he continues to recover from a right knee injury.

The world No. 1 last played at Wimbledon, where he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final to win back-to-back titles at the All-England Club and his sixth major title.

Sinner had pulled out of a pair of Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati before withdrawing from the US Open.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner posted on social media. “We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.

“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”

The 25-year-old has a 44-3 record and six titles on tour this season, including Wimbledon and five 1000 titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.

Sinner’s rival, and defending US Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz announced Thursday that he would be returning at Flushing Meadows after missing several months - and both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon - due to a wrist injury.
