The Montreal Alouettes will hold a news conferencetoday to introduce defensive end Michael Sam, who the team signed to a two-year deal on Friday.

"With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today," Alouettes general manager Jim Popp said in a statement on Friday. "Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team."

Last May, Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL when the St. Louis Rams selected him in the seventh round. 

After failing to make the Rams roster, the25-year-old was signed to the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before being cut from the team.

Sam captured the SEC defensive player of the year and was named a unanimous first-team, All-SEC selection in 2013 when he led one of the NCAA’s most competitive conferences in both sacks and tackles for loss.
