From 2016 on, the Toronto Argonauts will have a stable ownership group and a place to call home. And on Monday the team's new ownership group announced they will extend general manager Jim Barker and head coach Scott Milanovich for three years when they take over at the end of the year.

Barker and Milanovich's names are the first off a list of the team’s core players and personnel staff who are entering the final year of their contracts.

Efforts to prolong Milanovich’s stay with the Argos, in particular, began during the 2014 season, but stalled as team officials focused on resolving Toronto's ownership situation. Milanovich did not reveal any frustrations last season, even though media pressed him several teams about his contract situation and Toronto’s ownership dilemma. League sources say a long-term extension with the Argos was always more important than a richer deal to Milanovich.

League sources also tell TSN, NFL teams began inquiring about Milanovich's contract status last season. And prior to the start of the 2015 preseason, Barker made it no secret that it was crucial to settle his head coach’s future first.

Barker's own extension means the general manager will have the mandate to extend the stays of notable Argos also looking for new deals, including quarterback Ricky Ray, receiver and returner Chad Owens, and kicker Swayze Waters.

Ray will start the 2015 season on the six-game injured list as he continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. The Argos, who will play one final year at Rogers Centre, will start their regular season on the road in Fort McMurray, Alberta against the Edmonton Eskimos on June 27.
