CAMPBELLVILLE, Ont. - Randy Waples stole the show Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack.

Waples, of Milton, Ont., drove unbeaten Control The Moment to an emphatic win in the $685,000 Metro Pace before guiding State Treasurer to victory in the $685,000 Canadian Pacing Derby.

Then for good measure, Waples took L A Delight to the finish line in the $455,000 Shes A Great Lady, the 3/5 favourite, for two-year-old fillies. He became the first driver to win all three events in the same year and flashed three fingers after L A Delight's victory.

"These are the nights you dreamed about when you were a kid jogging horses on the farm," said Waples. "I just can't believe how it all set up . . . it's just a very lucky night for me."

American Ron Pierce was the last driver to win both the Metro Pace and Canadian Pacing Derby on the same night, accomplishing the feat in 2011.

"I'd lke to be one of those guys who says I don't feel the pressure or I don't get nervous but I'd be lying," Waples said. "You just don't want to cost people money and make the wrong moves.

"I had three great horses to drive and they all showed up."

Waples, 50, took Control The Moment, the 1/2 favourite, to the lead before the half-mile mark. And the impressive sophomore never looked back, cruising to a 2 1/4-length win in the richest event for two-year-olds with a career-best time of 1:49.4.

Control The Moment captured the $342,500 winner's share with his seventh straight victory.

"When you get to this level anybody can beat you at any point but I'll tell you he's a very very unbelievably nice animal," Waples said. "I have a tendency to let him shut down and go to sleep but I could hear Steve (Betting Line driver Steve Condren) starting to make another round at me and I started (Control The Moment) again and took off.

"It seems like he has a huge set of lungs to him. He just does not get tired."

Condren, also of Milton, drove Betting Line to a second-place finish. Voracity, driven by Sylvain Filion of Saint-Andre-D'Argenteuil, Que., was third.

Waples was also scheduled to drive Voracity but chose to go with Control The Moment in the big race.

"I've got all the respect for Voracity," he said. "It's tough when you get two in there but this (Control The Moment) was my boy."

Control The Moment paid $3.10, $2.30 and $2.10 while Betting Line returned $3.20 and $2.60. Voracity paid $2.80.

Waples wasted little time returning to the winner's circle. Driving State Treasurer, the 8/5 favourite, for the first time since 2013, he guided the six-year-old to the victory in the Canadian Pacing Derby, the country's oldest harness race, in 1:47.4.

Waples used pretty much the same strategy with State Treasurer that he did with Control The Moment in the Metro Pace. Waples took State Treasurer to the lead shortly after the half-mile mark en route to a 2 1/2-length victory over Shamballa, driven by Rick Zeron of Oakville, Ont.

Shamballa showed impressive closing speed to come from last to finish second.

"I'm thinking I'm either going to look good or I'm going to look like an idiot," Waples said with a chuckle. "I have so much respect for Rick's horse the way he can come home.

"I just kind of figured at that point (coming home) I might as well let him keep rolling on because he was doing it real easy. I just wanted to get as much separation between me and Ricky as I could . . . that horse of his can just steam home and I knew I had burned mine pretty good."

Limelight Beach finished third.

State Treasurer paid $5.40, $3.40 and $3.20 while Shamballa returned $11.50 and $3.60. Limelight Beach paid $13.50.

The win was State Treasurer's fourth straight and eighth in 14 starts this season. The $342,500 winner's share also boosted his payroll past $880,000 in 2015, heady stuff for a horse that was purchased for $6,500.

"He's been unbelievable," said co-owner Sally MacDonald of Souris, P.E.I. "He's an incredible horse.

"He gives everything every race. We have had just so much fun with him. We've been lucky. He's had the best trainers, he's had excellent drivers. I just can't want anything more."

State Treasurer has recorded 29 career wins and over $1.8 million in earnings.
