New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday, according to medical charts obtained by ESPN.

The Giants star has been in a Florida hospital since he injured his hand while lighting fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The New York Daily News reports Giants officials, who were not permitted to see Pierre-Paul in the hospital, were unaware the star would undergo surgery until ESPN leaked the medical record.

The latest surgery contradicts earlier reports JPP had avoided major injury in the incident. However, Adam Schefter reports the star pass rusher could make a speedy recovery.

Yet, ESPN later reported the extent of his injuries may extend beyond the amputation.

The 25-year-old, who recorded 12.5 sacks last season, has yet to sign his $14.8 million franchise tag tender from the Giants and has sat out all offseason activities.

The Giants own the power to rescind the offer to Pierre-Paul, who would then become an unrestricted free agent.

Pierre-Paul also recorded 77 tackles and three forced fumbles while starting all 16 games in 2014. He has 42 career sacks since being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Giants open training camp on July 30. The deadline for Pierre-Paul to sign a long-term extension with the Giants is July 15, otherwise he will have to play under the franchise tag - or not at all.
